Our History
Our History, Untold Stories Exhibition
16th & 23rd March 2024 at Ormskirk Parish Church
The Our History, Untold Stories Exhibition provided a unique opportunity for the people of Ormskirk to explore and share their personal histories while celebrating the town’s rich heritage. Held at the historic Ormskirk Parish Church on two Saturdays in March, this exhibition offered a fascinating glimpse into the past through a display of historical items, photographs, and documents curated by the Ormskirk District Family History Society. Visitors were invited to delve into the town's history, as well as their own family histories, making connections between the past and the present.
The exhibition was not only a showcase of historical artefacts but also a space for personal storytelling. Members of the Ormskirk District Family History Society were on hand to help visitors uncover and explore their own family trees, offering expert guidance and insights into genealogical research. For many, this was a chance to trace their roots, learn about ancestors they never knew, and uncover hidden stories that had been passed down through generations. The event provided valuable resources for those looking to piece together their own family histories, with knowledgeable volunteers available to assist with research and offer tips on accessing local archives and resources.
In addition to learning about their own ancestry, attendees were encouraged to bring family heirlooms, photographs, and documents to the exhibition to share their personal stories with others.
These artefacts, often deeply sentimental, became a bridge between generations, sparking conversations about the lives and experiences of those who came before. From old military medals to antique jewellery and handwritten letters, each item had a tale to tell, contributing to the rich tapestry of Ormskirk’s collective history.
Overall, the Our History, Untold Stories Exhibition was a resounding success in highlighting the importance of preserving both personal and communal histories. It provided a meaningful opportunity for people to engage with the past in a personal and interactive way, while also contributing to a broader community effort to document and celebrate Ormskirk’s history for future generations. The exhibition was a testament to the power of storytelling and the lasting impact that our ancestors’ stories can have on shaping our understanding of who we are today.
