The Butterfly Collector & Friends

The Butterfly Collector and Friends Festival (27th August 2023)

A Family-Friendly Nature Adventure in Victoria Park

The Butterfly Collector and Friends Festival, held on 27th August 2023, offered a delightful and family-friendly experience as part of the Ormskirk Bank Holiday Festival. Aimed at providing a serene and nature-themed alternative to the lively high street festivities, the event took place in the tranquil surroundings of Victoria Park. Families were invited to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature, where they could enjoy a range of engaging and educational activities designed to both entertain and inspire.

What Happened:

  • 13 Different Engagement Activities: The festival featured a diverse mix of activities designed to connect children and adults alike with the natural world. One of the highlights was the nature treasure trail, where participants followed clues hidden throughout the park, uncovering the wonders of the local environment. Additionally, visitors could take part in tree detective missions, where they solved puzzles and learned about the trees, plants, and wildlife in Victoria Park. Interactive performances brought nature to life, including lively storytelling sessions by Tenderfoot Theatre, where attendees were transported into whimsical tales that celebrated the beauty and importance of local ecosystems.

  • Hands-On Craft Activities: Creativity flowed throughout the park with a variety of hands-on craft stations. Families created their own pollinator wands to celebrate the vital role bees, butterflies, and other insects play in the environment. Children (and adults!) also enjoyed making origami flower crowns, connecting the joy of art with nature, while pinecone bees were crafted to symbolize the important pollinators in our ecosystem. These craft activities were not just fun but also educational, helping participants understand the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving it.

  • A Traveling Nature Museum: One of the more unique elements of the festival was the traveling nature museum. This roaming display invited visitors to contribute their own "natural treasures"—whether it be a leaf, a rare rock, or a feather—and share their stories of personal connections with the natural world. The museum was a fascinating, interactive space that not only showcased these contributions but also fostered conversations about local wildlife and the role nature plays in our lives.

Why It Was Special:

The event’s peaceful, interactive approach allowed people to reconnect not just with nature, but with each other, as families worked together on craft projects, solved clues in the treasure trail, and shared stories in the nature museum. Overall, the Butterfly Collector and Friends Festival was a perfect example of how nature-themed events can bring communities together, creating lasting memories and fostering a shared commitment to preserving the environment.
